Lakeland Credit Union Donates $100,000 to Food Banks in the Lakeland Region
At Lakeland Credit Union, we are not only proud partners in our community, but we are also proud initiators. From our post-secondary Scholarship Program to our Financial Literacy Program, we support and help our Lakeland region grow to its full potential.
As a local credit union, Lakeland has seen first-hand the many ways the global COVID-19 pandemic is impacting our Cold Lake and Bonnyville residents. With more and more people struggling through undefined economic times due to job loss, illness, and childcare disruptions, food banks that are deemed essential services — have become more critical than ever.

To help curb food shortages caused by COVID-19, and provide immediate, tangible support for the communities we serve, Lakeland Credit Union is donating $100,000 to be shared between two food banks in our region. Being a member-owned organization, we must step-up and deliver assistance to our members and communities at large, ensuring they continue to flourish.
“As the impacts of COVID-19 continue to grow, the strain on our food banks will increase, and this donation will help keep these vital community services operating throughout these unprecedented times,” said Board Chair, Charmaine Code.

“When communities are challenged, it is the responsibility of leaders to step up, and Lakeland Credit Union is trying to do our part. As CEO at Lakeland Credit Union, I’m proud of this organization and the role our members have taken throughout our history. We see ourselves as contributors to our communities, not just participants. LCU was founded on the principle of ‘people helping people,’ and we will never change that approach,” said CEO Kelly McGiffin.
“At Lakeland Credit Union, we recognize the challenges many households are currently facing in 2020. For this reason, LCU is stepping up and making this one time exceptional donation,” said Wendy Morrison, Vice President, Culture & Corporate Governance.
About Lakeland Credit Union
From humble beginnings, Lakeland Credit Union has grown to be a co-operative that serves close to 11,000 members in Bonnyville, Cold Lake, and surrounding areas. LCU started with just ten people who wanted change and more value in their financial institution. Forming the St. Louis Savings and Credit Union on May 7, 1940, these forward thinkers took the first steps in building the credit union we admire today.
